See, how an event like this might work if Phil Preston were still with us is, everybody else would be out golfing, and Preston would figure out a way to obtain all the auction items, then give them away to his friends.

That’s part of who Phil Preston was.
As it is, the inaugural Phillip Preston Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 24, at McCormick Creek in Nappanee will indeed include a live post-golf auction, and that auction will include some rather sweet sports-related items up for bid.
Appropriately — given that Preston was known for giving away sporting event tickets — tickets are among the most common things being auctioned, thanks in large part to the generosity of Dan Burke, an Indiana Pacer assistant and good Preston friend (is there any other kind?)
Jim Hahn, one of the event’s organizers, emphasizes that the auction is open to all, not just those playing golf. It’s slated to start around 6:45 p.m.
Five sets of four Pacer tickets to various games, four of those games at home, the other in Chicago, are up for grabs.
So are three sets of Notre Dame football tickets, against varying opponents, and a limited-edition football autographed by all seven ND Heisman Trophy winners.
Items autographed by Larry Bird, Tom Crean, Shawn Kemp, Bob Knight, Scott Skiles and a couple Pacer players also are available. So are a few rounds of golf, and items as distinct as a hog roast and an Elvis Presley/Frank Sinatra tribute show.
The full list is below.
Several of Preston’s friends have worked hard at organizing this inaugural event and starting a scholarship in honor of the man who was the beloved informal godfather of local basketball.
You can do your part simply by bidding.
