MIDDLEBURY — Nate Ritchie is bound for Bloomington.

"I am blessed to say I will officially be playing basketball for Indiana University this coming fall, as a preferred walk-on!" said Ritchie through Twitter on Tuesday, July 1.

Ritchie, a 6-foot-7 Northridge High School graduate, becomes the first Elkhart County men's basketball player to walk on at IU since Elkhart Memorial's Ross Hales in the mid-1990s.

Goshen's John Ritter was a scholarship player for the Hoosiers in the early 1970s.

Ritchie would be the first-ever IU men’s hoopster from Northridge — walk-on or scholarship.

Ritchie was the area scoring champion at 24.0 points per game and No. 2 rebounder at 7.6.

He became just the ninth player to be named a first-teamer on The Elkhart Truth all-area team at least three times and finishes as the No. 8 scorer in Elkhart County history with 1,388 points.

Ritchie declined to comment further Wednesday, July 2.
