FRANKLIN — NorthWood carded a 318 Tuesday, June 17, and is tied for ninth place in the team standings after the first round of the IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at The Legends Golf Club.
Junior Alec Dutkowski (36-38 — 74), senior Logan Kauffman (36-38 — 74), senior Brayden Glaser (44-40 — 84), junior Matt Ely (45-41 — 86) and sophomore Hayden Klotz (45-45 — 90) represented the Panthers in the program's first-ever State Finals team appearance.
In shooting 2-over-par, Dutkowski carded four birdies while Kauffman produced a pair of birdies.
Glaser had two birdies, and Ely recorded one.
The top four golfers for NorthWood shot 18 bogeys, nine double bogeys and one triple bogey.
Panthers coach Brad Duerksen said it took his team a few holes to adjust to the 25 to 30 mph gusting winds and fast greens after calm, wet turf in Monday's practice round.
"We also had some unlucky bounces and balls that went out-of-bounds," said Duerksen on Tuesday afternoon. "But, overall, the guys grinded hard and finished pretty well (by shooting 157 on the Road 9 after posting a 161 on the Middle 9). We are in a position to take a run at the top five.
"We are the last ones here working on a practice green."
NorthWood is paired with Bloomington South, Homestead and Sullivan for the final round with a first tee-off time at 9:21 a.m. Wednesday, June 18.
Columbus North leads the 15-team field with a 299.
As an individual, Marian senior Michael Makris is tied for 17th after firing a 39-36 — 75 with two birdies and five bogeys.
Evansville Central senior Dylan Meyer shot a 70 and holds a two-stroke lead for medalist honors heading into the final round.
