ELKHART — Kenny Bearss — he of the the double s — will pursue a sports double in college.
The Elkhart Christian Academy graduate has signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at Bethel College, where he plans to play both baseball and basketball for the Mishawaka school.
The left-handed Bearss was a three-year varsity starter in both sports for the Eagles.
In baseball, he compiled a .425 career average and was named to the 2014 Indiana Academic All-State team.
In basketball for a 17-5 ECA club this past season, the point guard averaged 8.5 points and ranked among the area’s leaders at 4.7 assists and 2.2 steals.
“Kenny was torn between playing college basketball or baseball,” said Eagles basketball coach Ryan Culp, a Bethel College grad. “Bethel was intrigued enough with his talents to offer him an opportunity in both sports, and I’m confident Kenny can handle the demands of the situation.”
“Kenny will be an excellent fit at Bethel,” ECA baseball coach Chris Lemert said. “Kenny is very athletic and the coaching staff at Bethel will know how to develop his baseball skills.”
The Pilots, NAIA Division II members of the Crossroads League, are coached by Seth Zartman in baseball and Mike Lightfoot in basketball.
