INDIANAPOLIS — Fairfield sophomore Emily Mast faces Bloomington South junior Denise Azcui in a quarterfinal showdown of unbeatens when the Indiana high school girls tennis individual State Finals are staged this weekend at Park Tudor in Indianapolis.
In a doubles quarterfinal, NorthWood’s Kennedy Walter and Tori Schwartz (19-3) take on Fort Wayne Carroll’s Makenzie Schoeff and Taylor Stanchin (27-2).
All quarterfinals in singles and doubles are slated for 2 p.m. Friday, June 13. Semifinals are at 10 a.m. the next day and state championship matches at 2 p.m.
Mast enters at 28-0 after dominating the LaPorte Regional last weekend, while Azcui is 19-0.
They are among seven singles players still alive in the state field. The winner of their quarter plays senior Bailey Padgett (20-2) of team state champion Carmel in the semis.
Also among the final seven is Jade Kawamoto (24-0) of Greenwood, the twin sister of defending state champion Jackie, who slid down to No. 2 singles this year to give Jade the chance to compete for the state title. Jade’s a lefty, while Jackie’s a righty.
In doubles, Walter and Schwartz are among the final six pairs left in the state. If they win Friday, they’ll face Jasper’s bye duo of Elisabeth Ahlbrand and Brooke Lueken (18-2) in the semis.
Also among the final six is the unbeaten pair of Molly Fletchall and Emma Love (21-0) from Carmel.
