Penn rally falls short in semistate

Penn scores three in seventh, but falls one run short.

WEST LAFAYETTE — A seventh-inning rally by the Penn High School softball team fell one run short Saturday, June 7, as the third-ranked Kingsmen dropped a 4-3 decision to Hamilton Southeastern in the Class 4A Lafayette Harrison Semistate.

Penn trailed 4-0 entering the seventh, but scored three times to cut the deficit to one, before the final out was recorded. Mackenzie Joecken had a two-run single in the inning.

The Kingsmen committed three errors in the game behind losing pitcher Joecken and freshman Danielle Watson, who came into the game in relief in the fifth inning. Madelynn Newman had three of Penn’s seven hits.

In the other semifinal game, Huntington North shocked No. 1 and unbeaten Crown Point, 2-0.
