ELKHART — Tieshawn Johnson considers himself a straight shooter, and that's how he likes to be treated by his coaches.
"I want them to be straight forward with me," said Johnson. "Tell me what I need to do.
"Don't sugar coat it."
Johnson, an Elkhart Memorial High School senior who was named Tuesday, June 3, as the 2014 Tim Bringle Memorial Award winner as the top senior male athlete in Elkhart Community Schools, already knows that his remarks at the Bringle banquet will be sincere.
"I'll be thanking my coaches and thanking God," said Johnson. "I'll say what comes from the heart. That's kind of how I am about everything."
What does the Bringle Award mean to Johnson?
"It means I'm going down in history in Elkhart. I'm following guys like Nick Corpe, Marcus Perez, Mark Mills and Kyle Sears. Making history with those guys means a lot to me,“ he said.
Johnson was a standout in wrestling and football for the Crimson Chargers and he plans to take his mat and artistic talents to Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. He will be part of the wrestling team while studying fashion and marketing.
The Bringle Award was founded in 1946 and goes to a male senior at Memorial or Central and also takes into consideration athletic achievement; being well-liked and respected by coaches, teammates and peers; sportsmanship; and scholastic aptitude.
Johnson will be recognized at the Bringle banquet Thursday, June 19, at Christiana Creek Country Club. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and then a program starting around 6.
Tickets are $20. For reservations call ECS at 262-5532.
