ELKHART — Concord collected its first Elkhart Sectional baseball championship since 2009 on Monday, June 2, and the game was a nail-biter.
The Minutemen (15-15) edged Warsaw 2-1 to earn a spot in the LaPorte Regional on Saturday, June 7, by getting gutty pitching and timely hits.
Concord wriggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the sixth and went on to hoist the trophy.
Brenden Curry relieved starter Nick DeFreese with two runners on, walked the first batter he faced then got a strikeout, force out and strikeout with the infield and the outfield pulled in.
"That was obviously the turning point," said Minutemen coach Jim Treadway.
Curry, a semifinal winner on Saturday, May 31, against Northridge, retired three of four batters in the seventh to earn a save and DeFreese got the victory.
Warsaw's Justin Oberlin led off the game with a double, went to third base on Ethan Bradley's sacrifice bunt and scored on Caleb Heckaman's single.
Concord answered in the bottom of the first. With two outs, DeFreese rapped a single and scored on Curry's double.
In the Minutemen second, Jake Vernon socked a lead-off triple and pinch-runner Trevor Wilmore trotted home on Brett Austin's single.
Warsaw starter Tyler LaFollette gave up just four hits. The Tigers finished 11-16.
