SOUTH BEND — While Elkhart Central High School’s Treyton Harris and Keion Johnson dominated their field events, a crosstown rival represented Elkhart on the track.

Warsaw High School edged out Penn High School by one point to win the South Bend regional at St. Joseph on Thursday, May 29. Northridge High School placed highest among area teams, finishing seventh in a field of more than 30 schools.

Elkhart Memorial runner Blake Kramer won the 800 and finished third in the 1600 in the South Bend track and field regional, advancing to state for the first time in both events.

“It’s just really a blessing that the hard work is actually paying off,” Kramer said. “It was a goal of mine to make it in the 800 at the beginning of the year.”

In fact, Kramer never planned to run the 1600 at all. But when he recorded an impressive mile time at an indoor meet early in the season, he and coach Adam Homo decided to give it a shot.

“We only really planned on doing it two or three times,” Kramer said. “But my times just kept getting faster and faster.”

Kramer said earlier in the season that he hoped to run a 1:53 in the 800 and a 4:20 in the 1600 by the end of the year. He hit one of those goals, finishing his mile at 4:20.1.

The Memorial senior believes the 800 goal is still within reach at the state meet in Bloomington.

“The track at IU is definitely a fast track,” he said. “I’ve always had my personal best times there, so that’s a definite possibility.”

Harris earned his blue ribbon in the high jump by a half inch, recording a 6-5½ jump. Johnson also won close, tossing the 55-2 winning shot put throw an inch further than Penn’s Isiah Cook.

Fairfield High School hurdler Cameron Kitson finished first in the 110 high hurdles, narrowly defeating Wawasee High School’s Clayton Cook in the process. Kitson will make his first state meet appearance June 7.
