ELKHART — NorthWood’s Kennedy Walter and Tori Schwartz took their winter tennis lessons together, and it paid off with an Elkhart Sectional individual doubles title Wednesday, May 28.
Walter and Schwartz roared past Central Noble’s Tricia Vangessel and Cassidy Klemp 6-0, 6-1 on the Elkhart Central courts.
When Elkhart Memorial’s Haley Stouder and Taelor Grose advanced to team semistate a short while later Wednesday, it meant Walter and Schwartz were the sectional individual champs, as they were the only No. 1 duo from four feeding team sectionals to stand unbeaten in postseason besides the Crimson Charger pair.
“It’s very exciting," said Walter, a fourth-year varsity player. “Being a senior, I know each match I play can be my last, and I don’t want it to end.”
“After playing together last year, we knew we had potential together,” said Schwartz a junior, “so we took lessons together. We had to learn each other a little more and just be positive for each other.”
Walter and Schwartz improved to 18-3 together on the season. A year ago, also at 1 dubs, they finished 18-6.
They’ll likely next play in LaPorte Regional competition June 7.
In individual singles Wednesday, Concord’s Jenna Landis (19-4) downed Central’s Taylor Clarkson 6-0, 6-2.
Landis faces East Noble’s Chelsea Ort (16-5) in a sectional semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday on the Central courts. Ort beat DeKalb’s Kelsey Helmkamp 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Thursday’s Landis-Ort survivor meets undefeated Fairfield sophomore Emily Mast at 5 p.m. Friday for the sectional title.
