Elkhart Memorial, NorthWood, Jimtown and Penn earned shared or outright conference baseball championships during the 2014 baseball regular season.

Memorial and NorthWood wound up as co-champions in the Northern Lakes Conference at 10-4. NorthWood was a sectional champion in 2013.

Jimtown won the Northern State Conference at 13-1.

Penn reigned in the Northern Indiana Conference at 15-1.

The Northeast Corner Conference regular-season champion was Angola.

Now the Crimson Chargers, Panthers, Jimmies and Kingsmen head into the IHSAA tournament with a shot at more titles.

Memorial and Penn will compete in Class 4A — the Chargers at Elkhart and the Kingsmen at Plymouth. Jimtown and NorthWood will take part in Class 3A — the Jimmies at Marian and the Panthers at Whitko.

"We've made some big strides," said Memorial coach Scott Rost, whose team went 4-1 in its last five NLC games and take a 16-11-1 mark into the sectional to be played at Charger Field. "Things are coming together at the right time for us."

Rost describes the second half of the conference season as many "do or die" games in order to stay in the championship race.

"We were involved in a lot of close games, especially the last three, and it helped prepare us for the tournament," Rost said.

The 2013 Chargers went 7-24, but several players gained valuable varsity experience.

"I knew we'd be better," Rost said. "The core group worked extremely hard to improve. But that's quite an accomplishment to come from where we were."

Jimtown won its third straight NSC crown with a young squad full of juniors and consistently has four sophomores in the lineup.

"We lost eight seniors from last year," Jimmies coach Darin Mast said. "Not too many people gave us a chance. But we just found a way to win games."

Mast said the pitching and hitting has been steady, but the defense got off to a shaky start.

"Once we found a way to relax and play the way were are capable, we started winning," Mast said. "One of the key games was the first Bremen game. We were down 6-0 and came back to win. That's when these guys realized we're never out of a game. That was a big confidence booster for our kids."
