WARSAW — A handful of Concord runners, one Elkhart Memorial thrower and one Jimtown jumper will represent Elkhart County in the girls state track meet.

Jimtown’s Shawntel James out-leaped the rest of the long jump field in her regional-title winning performance. James recorded a 16-foot-8½-inch final jump, a full two inches farther than the second-place finisher.

Concord senior Jessica O’Connell will return to state in both hurdle events. O’Connell won the 300-meter hurdles for the second year in a row and finished second in the 100 hurdles.

O’Connell was also part of Concord’s second-place 1600 relay team along with Ciana Bonfiglio, Vanessa Steiner and Mariah DeFreese.

Deanna Cornelius of Elkhart Memorial advanced to the state meet in the shot put. Cornelius finished second with a throw of 41-2.

Warsaw won its third consecutive regional, edging out Penn 67-60½. Concord finished seventh, and Elkhart Memorial placed eighth in the 41-team field.

Penn’s team of Sarah Hamilton, Emma Jankowski, Madison Woods and Ashleigh MacLeod won the 3200 relay. MacLeod, a freshman, also won the 800 with a time of 2:13.31.
