Chargers erupt in seventh against crosstown Blazers

Watson hits grand slam in opener, Bearss strokes four hits in nightcap as ECA sweeps previously unbeaten Riley.

Trailing 2-1 entering the final inning, Elkhart Memorial erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh and went on to a 6-3 win over crosstown host Elkhart Central in high school baseball Saturday, April 19.

Derrick Oley drove in a pair of runs for the Crimson Chargers. He and Cam Maxwell had two hits apiece for the winners, while Andrew Salmon had two for the Blue Blazers.

Jake Tucker (2-1) went the distance on the mound for Memorial.

At Elkhart Christian, the Eagles swept a doubleheader from previously unbeaten South Bend Riley (5-2), winning the first game 10-9 and the nightcap 5-2.

In the opener, winning pitcher Tanner Watson slugged a grand slam to lead the Eagle offense. In game two, Kenny Bearss had four hits and Josh Kelly added three.

At NorthWood, Will Kirkwood doubled twice among three hits and drove in five runs as the Panthers whipped West Noble 13-1.

At Penn, Brandon Stesiak tripled, doubled and drove in three runs as the Kinsmen won the first game of a doubleheader 12-7 over Logansport. The Berries rebounded to take the nightcap 8-7. Tyler Perry, besides catching both games, scored five runs on the day for Penn.
