Elkhart Central winning streak ends at 24 games

Posted on April 13, 2014 at 2:11 a.m.

Defending Class 4A state champion Elkhart Central's winning streak is over at 24 games.

The Blue Blazers won the opener of a doubleheader 13-3 in high school baseball Saturday, April 12, at Tippecanoe Valley, but the Vikings turned right around and won the nightcap 15-3. Each game went five innings.

Central won its final 22 games on its way to going 32-1 last season, then won its first two games this season.

At Angola, Northridge outlasted the host Hornets for a wild doubleheader sweep, 16-15 and 5-3.

Jake Bayliss homered and doubled in the opener for the Raiders, who had seven extra-base hits. Payton Carson tripled, doubled, singled and drove in three runs for the winners, who survived Angola's 18 hits.

In the second game, Andy Ross went the distance with 11 strikeouts and backed his own cause with a double, single and two RBIs.

At LaPorte, Elkhart Memorial and pitcher Scottie Clark were nipped 2-1 by the host Slicers (5-1) as LaPorte's tourney continued, but then the Crimson Chargers and Clark bounced back to whip Mattawan (Mich.) 13-2.

Clark doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs in that game. Daniel Asbury tripled, singled and plated three runs for the Chargers.
