NorthWood tops Tippy Valley for shot at sectional title

NorthWood topped West Noble 71-54 during the regular season.

SYRACUSE — NorthWood was knocked out of sectional play by Tippecanoe Valley in 2012-13.

On Friday, March 7, the Panthers returned the favor.

But it was far from easy.

NorthWood trailed by as many as eight points — 31-25 — in the second half and trailed 42-41 with 4:01 remaining before earning a 59-55 victory in the semifinals of the Class 3A Wawasee Sectional boys basketball tournament.

The championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, will pit NorthWood (20-2) against West Noble (18-5) — a 70-46 winner against Fairfield Friday. NorthWood topped West Noble 71-54 during the regular season.

"Tonight was a great game for Indiana high school basketball," said NorthWood coach after his team's balanced attack led by Jonathan Wilkinson (17 points), Will Stueve (12), Braxton Linville (11), Zach Zurcher (10) and Tanner Farmwald (9) prevailed against the Vikings.

"(Tippecanoe Valley) did a good job of controlling the tempo," said Wolfe.

Tanner Andrews led the Vikings (17-4) with 20 points (with eight rebounds and 10 of 10 foul shooting) while Robby Groom canned 15 points (11 in the second half) and Chainey Zolman 14 (10 in the second half).

Logan Britton produced six points, five rebounds and gave Tippy Valley another inside presence at 6-foot-5.

Wolfe said the turning point in the game was likely when Britton picked up his fifth foul with 2:57 left in the game.

"When he fouled out, our guards did a fabulous job of finding our post players," said Wolfe.

Farmwald scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer and layup the put the Panthers up twice — the last time for good at the 1:37 mark.

"Tanner Farmwald has been a heartbeat for us throughout the season," said Wolfe. "I could not be prouder of the heart and toughness he showed throughout the basketball game."

Linville did not play Tuesday, March 4, in a win against Lakeland while Wilkinson and Zurcher were banged up. Zurcher played Friday with a wrap on his left wrist.

The Panthers also fought through foul trouble — Tippy Valley was 22 of 24 at the stripe.

"We were reeling," said Wolfe. "It seemed like we had three or four guys in foul trouble. The versatility of our defensive players helped us rotate on their top scorers and helped us keep our offensive players in the game."
