Elkhart Christian runs record to 16-4 by beating Elkhart Central

ELKHART — Elkhart Christian Academy could get used to playing at historic North Side Gym.

With a 72-59 boys basketball win Tuesday, Feb. 25, against Class 4A Elkhart Central, the Class 1A Eagles pushed their all-time record at the storied facility to 2-1, including two wins against Central and a narrow loss to Elkhart Memorial.

"There's a lot of history at this place," said ECA coach Ryan Culp. "We brought a lot of fans and it was a great atmosphere."

The Eagles closed out its regular season with a scary good effort from its "five-headed monster."

The starting combination of Ryan Kupferschmid (23 points, 4 rebounds), Tanner Watson (19 points on 8-of-8 floor shooting, 8 rebounds), Cory Waycaster (13 points, 4 rebounds), Kenny Bearss (4 points, 7 assists), Jude Allen (4 points, 5 rebounds) helped ECA take a 16-4 mark into next week's 1A Hamilton Sectional.

"We began the season with a great team effort against Memorial and ended it with one against Central," said Culp. "That's a great compliment to the players and how they play together."

Kupferschmid became the program's all-time leading scorer when he got his 20th points on a layup at the 4:39 mark of the fourth quarter. He now has 1,206 career points, surpassing 2000 graduate Drew Ryall's 1,202.

"He's a very deserving young man," said Culp of Kupferschmid. "He's worked so hard."

Culp watched his Eagles take a 37-27 lead into halftime Tuesday.

When the Blue Blazers cut the gap to 47-42 on one of Langston Johnson's seven 3-pointers (leading to 21 points), ECA kicked things up a notch in the second half to push the lead as high as 22.

Central (5-13) played without head coach Troy Noble, who was out for what athletic director Brian Buckley called "personal issues."

Assistants Scott Sassaman and Scott Sekal ran the team.

"Our execution wasn't where it should have been offensively and defensively," said Sassaman. "When we hit the middle of their zone, we had a lot of good shots. We didn't execute well when they went back to man-to-man."

Led by Johnson's seven, the Blazers made 10 3-pointers, including six in the second half.

While Central committed only nine turnovers (one more than ECA), Sekal saw the Blazers rush too much for his liking.

"We need to work on our patience," said Sekal. "Our patience wasn't the best in the world."

Central — losers of five straight — wrap the regular season Friday, Feb. 28, at LaPorte.

Sassaman still likes his squad's chances heading into next week's Elkhart Sectional at North Side Gym.

"We can be dangerous," said Sassaman.
