Always aiming high, Penn finishes sixth at the State Finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Penn put a school-record nine wrestlers in the IHSAA State Finals and the Kingsmen had high hopes this weekend at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Senior Zack Davis (41-4 at 126) and junior Chase Osborn (40-2 at 170) both placed second and Penn sophomore Drew Hildebrandt (36-6 at 106) sixth, Penn senior Jeff Wiseman (38-9 at 182) seventh and Penn sophomore Kobe Woods (41-5 at 195) seventh to help the Kingsmen come in sixth in the team race, won by Indianapolis Cathedral.

"It was a little bittersweet for some kids," said Penn head coach Brad Harper Saturday, Feb. 22. "As a whole, we didn't come out and wrestle the way we wanted.

"This is a wake-up call for next year. We're striving to be the best. We're not there yet."

Davis, a 126-pound senior bound for the U.S. Naval Academy, was more than familiar with his finals foe — Hanover Central's Stevan Micic — having wrestled him at least once each year since the eighth grade.

"I tried to frustrate him, get him out of his gameplan and maybe take a bad shot," said Davis of Micic, who was on his way to a 10-5 victory and a third state championship. "He's definitely an experienced scrambler."

Osborn reflected on his whole state finals experience.

"I had some tough matches," said Osborn. "It feels good and I've got next year. Just being on the podium is cool.

"We had a great team with great leaders. Next year, we have to push to be on top."

Osborn said giving up the first takedown to Stevenson proved critical.

Until Saturday, the highest finish by a Fairfield Falcon wrestler had been third place by 140-pounder Rhys Cannaday in 2007.

Fairfield senior Forrest Glogouski placed second at 120, losing to flashy New Palestine Dragon Chad Red 6-2 in the finals.

"This tournament is the reason you wrestle," said Glogouski, who competed "under the lights" in front of 10,990 at state after finishing second at last week's Fort Wayne semistate. "I felt good."

Besides Glogouski (44-3), Davis (41-4) and Osborn (40-2), Concord senior DeLawrence Gayfield (37-5 at 120) placed fourth with Elkhart Memorial senior Tieshawn Johnson (41-1 at 195) fifth, Elkhart Central junior Eliseo Guerra (35-5 at 220) sixth, Penn sophomore Drew Hildebrandt (36-6 at 106) sixth, Penn senior Jeff Wiseman (38-9 at 182) seventh and Penn sophomore Kobe Woods (41-5 at 195) seventh.

In 2013, Gayfield placed sixth at 113 and Hildebrandt finished eighth at 106.

The Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award went to Franklin's Skyler Likins.
