INDIANAPOLIS — Penn’s Bethany Galat is going out on top.
The Penn High School senior won two state championships Saturday, Feb. 15, at the IHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Galat defended her title in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, giving her five state championships in her career.
A Texas A&M signee, Galat swam a 1:57.52 to beat Crown Point’s Amy Tetzloff in the 200 IM. It was her third straight state title in the event.
But Galat ramped things up even more in the 100 breaststroke finals, posting a state record time of 59.66, just edging Evansville Ritz’s Lillian King (59.99). According to the IHSAA, Galat’s time was the fifth fastest time recorded in national high school history.
Galat also won the 100 breaststroke title last season.
In addition, Galat was part of the Penn 200 freestyle relay team that finished second to Carmel. The team of Galat, Annie Spalding, Casey Ziegert and Emily Meckstroth swam a time of 1:34.21, while Carmel set a state record with a 1:31.37.
But while it was a great day for Galat, Wawasee’s Breanna Robinson had a frustrating one, as she finished second in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke — even though it took state records to beat her in both events.
Crown Point’s Aly Tetzloff posted a time of 52.70 in the 100 butterfly, beating Robinson (53.77) by just more than a second. Tetzloff’s time erased the state record set by Robinson’s sister Brittney in her state title swim two years ago.
Then in the 100 backstroke, Claire Adams of Carmel swam a record time of 52.97, to edge Robinson (53.96) once again.
In her three-year career at Wawasee, Robinson now has finished second three times and third three times at the state finals.
Penn’s Meckstroth came home fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.02 while her teammate Spalding was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.25.
Carmel claimed the team state championship for the 28th straight season. The Greyhounds recorded 399 points, while runner-up Crown Point had 209. Penn came home fourth with 166 points, while Wawasee had 43 points, coming in 15th.
In the 12 events Saturday, individual swimmers and the three relay teams set nine state records. In addition, Galat was the only senior to win an individual title.
