ELKHART — Applications for the inaugural Phillip Preston Memorial Scholarship are being accepted through April 1, according to the Elkhart County Community Foundation.

Graduating seniors who have been a member of their boys or girls basketball team (either as a player, student manager, student trainer or statistician) at any of several area schools are eligible to apply, though individuals who have received a full-payment basketball scholarship are not.

The schools are Concord, Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial, Fairfield, Goshen, Jimtown, Northridge, NorthWood, Penn, Plymouth, Warsaw, Wawasee and Westview.

The initial recipient will receive $1,000 during each of four years for a total of $4,000 toward pursuit of a four-year degree. A new recipient will be chosen annually.

The scholarship was started by friends in honor of Preston, who was a familiar, supportive face on the area basketball scene for decades and was known for his giving nature. Preston, a pharmacist by trade, died April 20, 2013, at age 76.

Scholarship candidates must have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and will be further evaluated on "a record of good citizenship, character and reputation in the community, and possess an exceptional work ethic in athletics."
