Harris
Central falls short in double OT thriller

ELKHART — Troy Noble has been preaching to his young Elkhart Central boys basketball team about finishing games strong.

Thursday night in a Northern Indiana Conference battle with South Bend Clay, the Blue Blazers found out the hard way exactly what their coach was saying.

Leading by eight points going into the fourth quarter after battling from behind all night, Central was unable to put Clay away and eventually lost in double overtime 67-65.

"I thought our young kids really battled tonight, but we just couldn’t close the deal," Noble said. "We played 40 tough minutes and that’s an awful lot for a bunch of freshmen and sophomores."

The Blazers had shots to win the game at the end of regulation and overtime but couldn’t get a pair of tough shots to fall.

Then in the second overtime, Clay scored the first four points to take a 64-60 lead before Central’s Aaron Flax scored on a rebound basket to cut the lead to two. Three Colonial free throws sandwiched a basket by Central’s Treyton Harris, setting the stage for a frantic final few seconds.

The Blue Blazers tried to set-up a 3-point shot to force a third overtime, but Clay fouled Antwaan Allen with 0:02 on the clock. Allen made the first shot and then missed the second intentionally, but Central was unable to get to the loose ball as time ran out.

Central fell to 5-12 overall and 1-6 in the NIC.
