GOSHEN — Elkhart wrestlers from both sides of town walked out of the Goshen High School gym with smiles on their faces.

Elkhart Memorial edged East Noble 124-121 for the IHSAA Goshen Regional team title Saturday, Feb. 8, and an Elkhart Central grappler helped put the Crimson Chargers over the top.

While Memorial had eight Fort Wayne Semistate qualifers (the top four finishers in each weight class advance to the Feb. 15 event at Memorial Coliseum) with champions Tieshawn Johnson (34-0 at 195 pounds), Jon Osoria (22-8 at 170) and Tony Vaughn (23-5 at 126) leading the way, it was the dramatic 5-4 championship-match win for Elkhart Central’s Eliseo Guerra (30-2 at 220) against East Noble’s Brandon Joest that sealed the team title for the Chargers.

"We were rooting for Eliseo to win," said Osoria.

"Eliseo Guerra is a fine, fine wrestler," said Memorial head coach Jim Iannarelli after the eighth regional team crown in program history and the first since 2007-08. "I’d rather see a kid from Elkhart get a championship than anybody else. Having (the Elkhart Sectional) stronger makes us stronger."

Guerra, who had a takedown in the last 20 seconds to take the final lead, avenged 2013 regional loss to Joest as well as a one-point defeat at the 2013-14 East Noble Invitational.

"This was a lot of preparation," said Guerra. "I trained hard to take the title from him."

Osoria, who credited his ability to hand-fight for his regional title, said Memorial took regional team title after last week’s Elkhart Sectional championship by ramping up the intensity and focusing on technique.

"We go hard at practice," said Osoria. "We take our technique and fine tune it."

Goshen, with Evan Smith (27-8) taking first place at 182, will send seven wrestlers to semistate.

"We wrestled better than we did last week (at the Elkhart Sectional," said Redskins head coach Jim Pickard. "We were more aggressive.

"We can’t take it easy. We can’t take it light. You have to get after people."

Fairfield’s Blake Glogouski (37-2 at 106), Forrest Glogouski (38-1 at 120) and Westview heavyweight Michael Yankosky (30-9) were also among the individual regional champions.
