Stingy Northridge shuts down Fairfield in girls basketball

Raiders pickup 15th victory while Falcons drop to 14-5

Posted on Feb. 5, 2014 at 12:06 a.m.

MIDDLEBURY — Northridge girls basketball coach Doug Springer found the Falcons ahead of the Raiders in points allowed per game.

Fairfield was 12th among Indiana girls squads with defensive average of 34.17. Northridge was No. 14 at 34.44.

On Tuesday, the Raiders beat the Falcons 53-25.

"We take pride in our defense," said Springer. "We wanted to send a message."

Springer said the key to Northridge's defense — and offense, for that matter — is all the girls buying into the team concept.

"Our kids are very unselfish, they are interchangeable and they do a great job of communicating," said Springer. "They've been playing together so long, they know each otehr inside and out."

The Raiders (15-4) led the Brodie Garber-coached Falcons (14-5) by 13-2 after one quarter and 24-10 at halftime.

Northridge got 13 points from junior Taylor Miller and 12 from senior Morgan Miller in running its win streak to five.

The Raiders have one more regular-season game — Friday, Feb. 7, at Wawasee — before playing in next week's Class 4A Northridge Sectional.

Fairfield was led offensively Tuesday by senior Jenna Kieper (10 points).

The game also featured Zook sisters on either squad. Mikaela Zook is in her senior season at Northridge. Sophomore Alyssa Zook is in her first season at Fairfield.

They are the two oldest of four siblings. Their mother, Theresa, is the principal at Millersburg Elementary in the Fairfield system.

Fairfield closes out the regular season with games on Thursday, Feb. 6, against Manchester and Saturday, Feb. 8, at Goshen before playing in next week's Class 3A Wawasee Sectional.
