Concord rolling, lift coming

DUNLAP — The Concord Minutemen didn’t have the kind of crowd they’d had a few days earlier to stoke them, so the Minutemen did the stoking from within, and it just might be a sign that they’re ready to take the next step.

Possibly getting a two-year starter back from injury soon likely won’t hurt the progression, either.

Four nights after whipping Goshen 58-37 in front of the near-capacity gathering of about 3,200 that turned out at McCuen Gym in part to honor the 1988 and 1990 state runner-up clubs, Concord welcomed closer to 500 for its home game on Tuesday, Jan. 14, but it didn’t matter as the Minutemen rolled over South Bend Clay 71-43.

“It was real good to keep it going,” said senior guard Ramon Johnson after riddling the Colonials for game highs of 25 points and six assists. “We didn’t have a real big crowd, mostly just the band. We had to feed off ourselves and our play.”

“I’m very pleased with that,” Concord coach Steve Austin said of his team maintaining the momentum it built Friday. “The thing is, we’re still growing. That’s the good thing. We’ve got a long way to go, and to get what we’ve gotten done these last two games, and to be getting Adam back soon, we’re pretty excited.”

Adam is senior Adam Glanders, the two-year starter originally expected to miss the entire season due to a hip injury.

Turns out Glanders doesn’t need a second surgery that was initially anticipated, and Austin said Tuesday the guard could be back as soon as the Jan. 24 Warsaw game.
