PLYMOUTH — Allison Ketcham, Jordan Bueter and Elizabeth Asdell may garner more accolades, but it’s Colleen Hunsberger’s presence coming off the right side that helps make Marian’s lineup of hitters an across-the-line lineup of killers.

The senior left-hander was as efficient as anybody on the court while helping the top-ranked Knights to a 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory over No. 5 Bellmont in the Class 3A Plymouth Semistate volleyball semifinals Saturday, Nov. 2.

Marian (36-1) earned a spot opposite Fort Wayne Concordia (28-7) in the 7 p.m. championship at Plymouth High School. No. 7 Concordia beat No. 3 New Prairie 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23 in the second semi.

“Colleen Hunsberger, our lefty, turned it up,” Knights coach Dan Anderson said. “She blocked and hit (from) the right side really well, which is a great weapon to have. We know our middles and the other side are good, too, so if our setter sets a clean ball, we’re going to win games. We’re not going to mess around.”

Ketcham (17), Bueter (14), Asdell (14) and Hunsberger (11) each rang up double-digit kill numbers.

Asdell added seven blocks and Ketcham five, while Maggie Gibson finished with 50 assists.

After the teams split the opening two sets, Marian jumped to quick and large leads that they would not relinquish in each of the final two games, building a 13-3 advantage in game three and a 9-3 spread in game four.

“Once we got our offense going and passed the ball well, we had some hitters to go to,” Anderson said. “It just took a little bit of time to get going.”

In a back-and-forth opening portion to the opening game, there were 12 ties by the time the score was 13-13, but then after the Squaws went up 15-13, the Knights erupted for nine straight points to take control with Gibson serving.

In game two, Bellmont bolted to a 12-1 lead and held on despite the Knights getting as close as three points three times.

The Squaws (32-6), led by senior twins Holly and Bailee Hankenson, were coming off a four-set regional win over No. 2 Delta.
