Phillips runs Central right into a sectional final

Halfback sets 2 ECHS records.

GOSHEN — It was like watching a movie and hitting the rewind button over and over. Elkhart Central’s Joe Phillips ran and ran and ran — right into the Blue Blazer history.

Phillips, Central’s relentless waterbug of a halfback, gashed Goshen for 317 yards on 44 carries — both numbers school records — as the Blazers won 35-21 in a Class 5A sectional football semifinal Friday, Nov. 1. The win puts ECHS into Sectional 10 championship against Concord. The game will be played at Rice Field. The Blazers and Minutemen have never met in a varsity football game.

Concord, though, will be introduced to Phillips.

“We had to stunt and blitz the world to stop (Phillips). He did a great job,” said GHS coach Mike Cheviron.

Phillips, a 5-foot-6, 145-pound junior, hit Goshen with touchdown runs of 28 and 1 yard as Central piled up a whopping 465 total yards — 438 on the ground. Fullback Keion Johnson added two run as the Blazers improved to 4-6.

“Joe is special. He’s a kid who still has not taken that big hit because he gets out of the way,” Central coach Levon Johnson said.

The Blazers jumped to a quick 14-0 first-quarter lead before Goshen answered midway into the second quarter when quarterback Cameron Kline found Brady Bechtel for a 28-yard scoring pass up the sidelines. Late in the first half, the Redskins missed a golden opportunity to tie the game when a Central punt snap sailed over the head of Eddie Coddington. The sophomore scooped up the ball inside the ECHS 10 and managed to get off a left-footed kick.

Goshen roughed Coddington on the play, which gave the ball back to Central.

Instead of GHS having the ball at the Central 30, the Blazers got the ball at the Goshen 38 and scored on the last play of the first half with Johnson diving in from the 1, capping an 87-yard possession.
