Woods claims semistate cross country title; Raider boys, Penn girls each second

NEW HAVEN — The Northridge boys and Penn girls each finished second at the New Haven cross country semistate on Saturday, Oct. 26, while the Kingsmen’s Maddie Woods took home the individual girls title.

The top six teams and the top 10 individuals not with advancing teams will run at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Saturday, Nov. 2, to determine the state championship teams and individuals.

In the boys race, Fort Wayne Carroll cruised to the championship, beating Northridge by 41 points (71-116). The Penn boys team came home ninth.

The top area boys finisher was Northridge’s Blake O’Dell, who was fourth with a time of 16:04, while his Raider teammates Conner Sandt (16:26) and Neel Patel (16:36) also finished in the top 20. Wawasee’s Zach Cockrill finished 23rd, one spot and less than a second away from qualifying for state.

Woods (18:10) topped Pendleton Heights’ Alex Buck (18:18) for the girls individual title, while Elkhart Memorial’s Brooke Moore (18:29) took fourth and Penn’s Danielle Frank (18:46) fifth in the race.

Once again a local runner was one spot away from advancing to state, as Elkhart Christian’s Kayla Casaletto finished with a 19:25.98, while the 10th qualifier, Norwell’s Hannah Asachliman, posted a 19:23.82.

Carroll also won the girls team title, edging Penn 69 to 73. Northridge came home fourth with 164 points.
