ELKHART — For the first time in more than a decade, Memorial High School is searching for an athletic director.
Doug Thorne, executive director of personnel for Elkhart Community Schools, said that search is beginning in-house.
Frank Kurth was approved as a Memorial assistant principal earlier this week by the Elkhart School Board, creating the opening.
Thorne said the athletic director’s position was posted Thursday, June 27, and will be considered an internal posting only for five working days.
“We believe we have some staff members (within ECS) that will fit the bill,” Thorne said. “That’s where we’ll look first.”
Thorne said it’s beneficial to hire somebody who knows “the culture of the community” and is familiar with high school sports in northern Indiana.
He said no firm timeline has been established for selecting a new AD.
“We’d like to move quickly,” Thorne said, adding that Kurth remains present along with longtime assistant AD Phyllis Tubbs to handle athletic matters in the meantime.
The selection, according to Thorne, will be made by superintendent Robert Haworth and Memorial principal Mark Tobolski, with others also having input in the process.
Kurth, an Elkhart Central and Ball State graduate who served as a college football assistant at several schools before coming to Memorial as AD, could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon. He is serving as summer school principal at Memorial.
