NAPPANEE — Steve Neff, who is tied as Indiana’s all-time winningest girls basketball coach, will coach one last season at NorthWood High School and then retire, NorthWood athletic director Norm Sellers stated Tuesday, May 7.

Sellers said he wants to be able to name a head coach-in-waiting by the end of the 2012-13 school year that will be on staff next winter then take over as leader of the program. The AD is now in the process of interviewing candidates.

“If it works out the way we want it to, this will give the new coach a year to work with Coach Neff,” said Sellers.

Neff, who has a record of 634-175 in 36 seasons (Scottsburg’s Donna Cheatham is 634-203 in 38 seasons), retired as a teacher on Feb. 21, and has previously indicated his intentions to step down as head coach after next season.
