ELKHART — Memorial’s time in tight contention for a win ticked away quickly Tuesday night, Feb. 19, at North Side Gym, and that’s with the untimely factor of time also ticking down quickly in the boys basketball regular season as a whole.

South Bend Clay bolted to a 24-10 lead through one quarter and the Crimson Chargers got no closer than seven the rest of the way — that just once, with 2:26 left in the final period — as the Colonials spoiled Memorial’s Senior Night with a 65-50 victory.

“We didn’t compete very hard,” Charger coach Mark Barnhizer said. “When you absolutely can’t make shots, and then you get kids not trying very hard, that’s not good. We just gotta rectify it. We’ve got one more (game) Friday. We’ve got six days to go (before Tuesday’s Elkhart Sectional contest against Goshen), and we gotta try to get better in those six days. We got our work cut out for us.”

Senior Markese McGuire scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for Memorial (8-11) to go with three assists and three steals. Junior Freddie Rhodes provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Taron Miller led Clay with 17 points, all in the second half, and six assists. Kenny Jones added 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.
