ELKHART — Troy Noble scanned the stat sheet to see if he could find any hiccups in Central’s performance against Elkhart Christian Academy.

From the field: 21 of 39. From behind the arc: 5 of 11. From the free throw line: 11 of 17. On the boards: 23 to ECA’s 14.

“These are winning basketball numbers,” the Blazers’ coach said. “When we have eight turnovers, which is our lowest all year, when we only give up three offensive rebounds — that’s winning basketball. I don’t care if it’s (against) a 1A or a 4A, those are winning numbers.”

The solid performance lifted Central past ECA 58-43 Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Central (6-14) got off to a blazing start, nailing a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter and securing a 30-15 lead at the half. Junior JaRon Walters hit seven straight from the field to finish with a career-high 18 points alongside teammate Tre Taylor, who also set a career-high with 18 of his own.

While ECA (13-6) picked up steam in the second half and matched Central point-for-point, the Eagles could not overcome the first half deficit.

“That was the best defensive team we’ve faced on our schedule all season,” ECA coach Ryan Culp said. “Probably more aggressive than we’ll see the rest of the season. That was good for us. It took us a half to figure out that we could be a little more aggressive.”

Both coaches said the game will help their teams prepare for the state tournament next week.

Noble said Central will continue to execute it’s newly implemented OODA system — Observe, Orientate, Decide and (Be) Aggressive — to help pace its offense.

“It’s slowed the game down for kids in practice and it’s starting to pay dividends, especially, I hope, against a great Warsaw team Tuesday night,” Noble said.
