NorthWood eyes another title after running away from Fairfield
Posted on Feb. 8, 2013 at 12:00 a.m.

NAPPANEE — Fairfield scrapped, but NorthWood’s experience and talent got to be too much to overcome.

As a result, the Black Swish ran away from Falcons for a 58-29 victory Friday, Feb. 8, in the semifinals of the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional girls basketball tournament.

“They are basketball players,” said Fairfield coach Brodie Garber of NorthWood, which plays Saturday, Feb. 9, with a shot at the program’s 23rd sectional title, including the ninth in the class era. The opponent will be West Noble (16-7), a 60-49 winner against Lakeland in Friday’s other semifinal. “You’ve got to give credit where credit’s due.”

The Black Swish (21-3) had beaten the Falcons 62-21 on Dec. 18, but two starters — Haley Brown and Jenna Kieper — did not play because of injury.

In the rematch, Fairfield and NorthWood traded baskets early before the host school went on a 20-0 run that all but put the game away.

With Jordyn Frantz scoring all of her 12 points and Morgan Olson adding eight of her game-high 16 points in the first two quarters, NorthWood was up 37-9 at halftime.

“We got things rolling,” said Black Swish coach Steve Neff, whose club has won 16 straight games. “Anytime you can score 37 in a half, we’ll take that. That sort of set the tone for the game.

“We’ve got a little bit more experience (than Fairfield) and that surely helps.”

The Black Swish did not commit their first turnover until the 2:36 mark of the second quarter. Fairfield coughed the ball up 11 times in the first half and 18 on the night.

Frantz Taylor Fielstra and Schwartz canned two 3-pointers apiece for NorthWood.

“Anybody who thinks they can pack it in against us (we’ll see we can shoot outside),” said Neff. “Schwartz scored eight and that might be a career high for her. We had to beg her to shoot it.”

Olson (13) and Bley (11) helped NorthWood pull down 38 rebounds.

“(NorthWood) just had too muscle and too much talent,” said Garber.

Brooke Mast led Fairfield (13-9) with eight points while Jenna Kieper added seven and Katie Yates six. Brown and Mast came into the night each averaging just over 10 points per game.

On the plus side, the Falcons lose no players to graduation.

“Everybody gets to come back, which is nice,” said Garber. “But we don’t want to sit here a year from now just being another year older. Individually, we want to develop and we want to develop as a team.”

NorthWood and West Noble did not meet during the 2012-13 regular season. The Black Swish topped the Chargers 62-28 in the 2012 sectional championship game.

West Noble’s only sectional crown came back in 1988.

NorthWood is 8-1 so far this season against 3A competition while West Noble in 5-4.
