Boys Tennis Penn’s Wang named NIC MVP

SOUTH BEND — Penn sophomore Michael Wang is the Northern Indiana Conference boys tennis most valuable player.

Wang and doubles partners Brad Walter, a senior, and Sean Anderson, a junior, are also Kingsmen on the 2012 All-NIC first team.

Penn, coached by Eric Bowers, won the league title.

His peers selected Steve Bender of South Bend St. Joseph as NIC Coach of the Year.

All-NIC Boys Tennis

First team: Singles — Michael Wang (Penn), Aaron Zaderej (Riley), Patrick O’Connor (St. Joseph). Doubles — Brad Walter/Sean Anderson (Penn), Sam DeTrempe/Michael Minatel (St. Joseph).

Second team: Singles — Nick Burton (Central), Jack Julian (Marian), Victor Lu (Penn). Doubles — Riley Futterknecht/Alex Moon (Central), Michael Wroblewski/Jason Rink (St. Joseph).

Area honorable mention: Doubles — Colin Kibbe/Clint Lowenhar (Marian).

MVP: Michael Wang (Penn).

Coach of the Year: Steve Bender (St. Joseph).

Final standings: Penn 8-0, St. Joseph 7-1, Central 6-2, Marian 5-3, Adams 4-4, Riley 3-5, Mishawaka 2-6, Clay 1-7, Washington 0-8.
