Notre Dame welcomed Week 1 by releasing its depth chart against Rice during a press conference Tuesday, Aug. 26.
The four players currently suspended during the ongoing academic fraud investigation — KeiVarae Russell, DaVaris Daniels, Ishaq Williams and Kendall Moore — are not on it. Head coach Brian Kelly said they won’t play Saturday and that he has’t received an update on the investigation status.
Don’t look too much into the fact that Romeo Okwara is listed ahead of Andrew Trumbetti. Brian Kelly said that was a mistake and the rising freshman will indeed start at weakside defensive end over Okwara. Kelly said both will play, though, and are “1A/1B” on the depth chart.
With DaVaris Daniels, KeiVarae Russell, Ishaq Williams and Kendall Moore still out due to the ongoing academic fraud investigation, Notre Dame has officially released their replacements. Chris Brown takes the top receiver spot in place of Daniels; Cole Luke lines up where Russell would have been in the secondary; Isaac Rochell replaces William on the defensive line and freshman Greer Martini will back up Jaylon Smith in the absence of Moore.
No big surprises offensively, though wide receiver Corey Robinson fractured his thumb and had a pin placed in Friday. Robinson practiced Monday and is still expected to start Saturday.
Looks like there still isn’t a definitive starting running back. Cam McDaniel, Tarean Folston and Greg Bryant are separated by “ORs,” so expect all three of them to get plenty of reps in a game Notre Dame can afford to experiment during.
As expected, there are 12 freshmen and sophomores on the defensive two-deep. Check out the video above to see who Kelly names as “integral” freshmen this season.
Kickoff against Rice is scheduled for 3:42 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Notre Dame Stadium.
