Notre Dame tackles 11th day of spring practice

James Onwualu and Matthias Farley continue their steady rotation around the defense.

Notre Dame entered its 11th spring practice Friday, April 4, inside and away from the rainy, dreary weather. But at least it's not snow, right? Some observations from the 30-minute media window at the beginning of practice:

  • Six days after undergoing surgery to insert a rod into his fractured right leg, linebacker Jarrett Grace returned to practice on crutches and watched from the sideline.
  • Center Nick Martin (PCL) wasn't in pads, but he did run through no-contact"tempo" drills with the offense before returning to the stationary bike. Slot receiver Will Mahone (foot fracture) wore a walking boot but walked around without crutches.
  • Running backs Cam McDaniel and Tarean Folston rotated with the first-team offense. Greg Bryant came in with the twos.
  • The defensive line and linebackers worked on strip-sacking drills. Former receiver James Onwualu worked with the linebackers during the drill, as did former safety Matthias Farley.
  • While there are several contested positions along the defense, the Irish have maintained a steady secondary for most of the spring. Austin Collinsworth and Max Redfield are taking first-team reps at safety, while KeiVarae Russell and Cole Luke have started at cornerback.
