Notre Dame’s freshman class may be down a player one month before training camp begins.

Incoming freshman linebacker Niles Sykes will not be playing for the University of Notre Dame this fall, Blue and Gold News reported Wednesday, July 2.

Sykes, who graduated from Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, Ill., signed with the Irish in February.

Shortly after the news broke, Sykes tweeted that he is still registered as a student at Notre Dame.

Even if Sykes departs, Notre Dame will still have a deep linebacker group from the incoming class. Nyles Morgan — rated the fifth best linebacker in the 2014 class by Rivals — was Notre Dame’s big grab in the position. He’ll be joined by Greer Martini, Kolin Hill and Fort Wayne Carroll product Drue Tranquill.

Sykes also visited Syracuse before choosing the Irish in December. According to his Rivals profile, Sykes also had offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Missouri, Purdue and South Florida.

Notre Dame did not immediately offer a comment on Sykes’ reported departure.
