No. 1 Kansas State, No. 2 Oregon fall, clearing way for No. 3 Notre Dame
WACO, Texas — A Senior Day shutout just got a whole lot sweeter for Notre Dame: How's No. 1 in the country sound?
In the waning moments of Notre Dame's 38-0 home win over Wake Forest, something special was brewing for Notre Dame Nation in Waco, Texas.
Baylor (5-5) was shocking the college football world, beating No. 1 Kansas State (10-1), 52-24.
That alone would have moved No. 3 Notre Dame (11-0) to the Top 2 in the BCS polls and set the Irish on track for the National Championship Game. But minutes later, No. 2 Oregon fell to Stanford in overtime, 17-14.
For the first time since 1993, Notre Dame will be the No. 1 team in the country.
The new BCS standings come out Sunday night.
Notre Dame will play USC at Los Angeles next week. The Trojans (7-4) lost to UCLA (9-2) 38-28 on Saturday.
The two losses may also help Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in the Heisman hunt. Te'o was ranked behind Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein and Oregon running back Kenjon Barner on ESPN's Heisman watch list and may be poised to move up.
