Friday night football's lopsided win streaks and a monster rivalries

A look at win streaks and rivalries for this week's high school football games.

Posted on Sept. 26, 2013 at 1:00 a.m.

Win streaks which numb minds and a couple of monster rivalries -- all a part of Week 6 in the Elkhart County area high school football landscape.

The annual neighborhood take-no-prisoners theater known as Jimtown and Concord will raise the curtain on a 53rd meeting Friday, Sept. 27 at Jake Field. The Jimmies and Minutemen are dead-even with 26 wins apiece. But don't go in expecting a close score. Since 1990, only three matchups were decided by less than 10 points -- all three 3-point decisions. ... In the last 20 games between the two rivals decided by 10 points or more, the average margin of victory has been nearly 23 points, including the eye-opening 48-0 Jimmie triump in 2012, the largest spread in series history.

Concord, which is ranked No.1 in Class 5A, will be well-oiled for the contest and may be looking for a little "Back at ya'' kind of retribution for the Boys of Baugo. And you can't blame them. Across the board, position-by-position, 11 on each side of the ball -- including special teams -- this might be the best Minutemen team ever assembled. The next four weeks -- Jimtown, Plymouth, Northridge and Warsaw -- will give Concord a chance to prove it, but coach Tim Dawson has seen his teams come in to this rivalry game with better personnel only to get punched in the face by the Jimmies. The Minutemen will be thinking picture, not revenge. This year, I'll Concord.

On the other hand, there are some lopsided series games tonight ... NorthWood takes its whopping 37-1 record over Northridge to Middlebury. The Panthers are beaten up after a loss to Wawasee last Friday and the Raiders are sky high after thumping Warsaw. I'll take Northridge in a survival kind of game. ... In the NIC, Penn, the second-ranked 6A team, is 29-1 lifetime over South Bend Washington, including 28 straight. Kingsmen could be playing freshmen early in the second half of what surlye will be a rout of the Panthers, who are 0-5.

Central and Memorial get Mishawaka and South Bend Clay, respectively, and the Blue Blazers and Crimson Chargers need something good to happen after frustrating losses last week. Defense is just killing both Elkhart schools, but I'll go ECHS and EMHS to bounce back. ... St. Joe and Marian will tee it up in the annual "Holy War'' skirmish -- Knights will win a tight one -- while in the NECC, Fairfield goes for a third straight victory at home with Angola, a game which starts the Falcons on a tough three-game stretch of league games with Lakeland and Churubusco coming. I like the Falcons.

A couple of NLC games are left: Warsaw at Goshen and Plymouth at Wawasee. The Tigers will be testy after being humbled at home and the Redskins, again, won't have any answers. Plymouth, which is still in the thick of the conference race, will have its hands full with Wawasee, which has deep-ball threats. Take the Tigers and Warriors.
