It was one of the longest games on record, according Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association executive director Brian Abbott.

Lafayette Central Catholic and Westview played long into the night Saturday, June 7, before the No. 3-ranked Knights topped the Warriors 8-3 in a the Class 2A Whiting Regional championship game.

The contest lasted 18 innings and took almost five hours to complete. Abbott said the length is in the top five in IHSBCA annals.

A game that featured just two extra base hits — doubles by Westview's John Yoder and Central Catholic's Evan Kennedy — began at 6 p.m. CT and lasted until almost midnight.

"It was a marathon," said Westview coach Jason Rahn. "Each team was into his third pitcher. We were close to 300 pitches on our side."

There were 32 stranded runners (18 by Central Catholic) and 27 strikeouts (21 recorded by Central Catholic pitchers) in a contest played with the flickering flames of oil plants beyond the Oil City Stadium walls.

Central Catholic ran its postseason-game win streak to 38 and is chasing its first 2A state title after winning the last five in 1A. The Knights play No. 1 Wapahani in the 2A Kokomo Semistate on Saturday, June 14.

Abbott is no stranger to long games. The Huntington North head coach saw his team play 38 innings in a 45-hour span.

The longest game in the IHSBCA record book is 28 innings (Griffith vs. Highland in 1976).

According to the IHSBCA, Northridge has played in marathons of 19 innings (1991 vs. Warsaw), 18 (vs. Mishawaka in 1989) and 17 (vs. Angola in 1999).

There are also many long games not listed in the IHSBCA book.
