Bacon-themed uniform comes to baseball

Lehigh Valley IronPigs unveil their salute to a beloved pork product.

Posted on Feb. 26, 2014 at 10:56 a.m.

How's that old song go?

"Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie …"

You know the one.

Hot dogs and baseball have been tied for more than a century.

How about bacon and baseball?

If your team name is tied to a pork product then it's a natural (not to be confused with The Natural).

That's why the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelpha Phillies, have come up with a bacon-themed uniform.

Oh sure, Allentown, Pa., is known for its steel production and the IronPigs are a nod to "pig iron," a part of the steel-making process.

But Pennsylvanians dig their pork products.

Scrapple (pork mush) anyone?

I bet this pig idea would fly in just about anyplace people dig bacon.

Translation: Everywhere.

Are you listening South Bend Silver Hawks owner Andrew Berlin?

If Swoop can fly at Four Winds Field, so can a pig.
