EASTLAKE, Ohio — Dorssys Paulino smacked his first home run of the Midwest League baseball season to open the scoring in the three-run bottom of the sixth inning Thursday, June 19, and the Lake County Captains went on to beat the South Bend Silver Hawks 5-3.
It was the first game of the split season’s second half.
Besides the homer, Grant Fink doubled home a run and Claudio Bautista knocked in a run with a base hit in the Lake County sixth. The Captains are now 19-17 at Classic Park this season.
South Bend scored a run in the first inning after a walk to Breland Almadova and a single that moved him to third, South Bend used a double steal to open the scoring. Almadova stole home while the runner from first swiped second base. The score was 1-0 South Bend after one inning.
Lake County took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Eric Haase doubled to left field to begin the inning. Nellie Rodriguez walked, and both runners moved up on a ground out. Torsten Boss grounded to second base and Haase scored. Grant Fink then singled to left field and Rodriguez scored to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the eighth inning, South Bend scored a pair of runs to close the gap. With two outs and a runner on first base, Michael Perez doubled to left field and the score was 5-2. Perez scored on a single from Marty Herum and the led was cut to 5-3.
RHP Dace Kime (2-9) took the ball for the Captains and earned the win. Kime pitched five innings and allowed three hits, two walks one earned run. Dace struck out eight. Anderson Polanco entered in relief and twirled one and two-thirds innings Polanco walked two and struck out two.
Alexis Paredes pitched one and one-third innings and allowed three hits, two earned runs one walk and one strikeout. Ben Heller pitched the ninth inning and struck out the side. Heller earned his fourth save of the season.
RHP Sean Furney (2-3) started for South Bend and took the loss. Furney pitched five and two-thirds innings, and allowed nine hits, five runs, four were earned, he walked two and fanned four.
Austin Platt pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless relief allowing just one walk and he struck out two. Bud Jeter entered in the bottom of the eighth inning and struck out the side in order.
The Captains will continue their three game series with South Bend on Friday night, June 20. Lake County will send LHP Luis Lugo (5-4, 4.31) to the mound to face RHP John Omahen (1-2, 5.82) of South Bend. First pitch is at 7 p.m. from Classic Park.
South Bend’s next home game at Four Winds Field is Tuesday, June 24.
