Summer brings bevy of sports camps and training activities

Concord Youth Soccer, Memorial football, Goshen basketball among the latest updates.

CAMPS

Baseball

Elkhart Memorial: The Elkhart Memorial High School baseball coaching staff and players will be holding their annual youth camp from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday-Thursday, June 10-12, at Charger Field. The camp is open for players in grades 2-8. Registration forms are available in the Memorial athletic office, at emhschargers.org or by emailing head coach Scott Rost at srost@eklhart.k12.in.us.

Basketball

Goshen Cager Camp: The 16th annual camp conducted by the Goshen High boys basketball staff is set for June 23-27. The camp is for boys entering grades 2-8 who plan to attend Goshen Schools. Registration forms were sent home in elementary school folders. Forms also are available at http://basketball.goshenschools.org/feeder-programs/cager-camp/. ESC Tipping Point: The Elkhart Sports Center, in partnership with Tipping Point, is offering two skills camps this summer for boys and girls entering grades 3-8. Dates are June 16-20 and July 7-11, each from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $195, or $165 if paid by May 19 for the June camp and June 9 for the July camp. To register, visit elkhartsportscenter.com.

Football

Elkhart Memorial: Camps are offered June 9-12 (10:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) for incoming freshmen and July 14-17 (1 to 2:30 p.m.) for fourth- through eighth-graders. Each camp, directed by Crimson Charger coach Bill Roggeman and staff, is $25. Registration forms are available in the Memorial athletic department or at emhschargers.org.

Goshen: New Goshen High School head football coach Kevin Park is offering camps for Goshen Middle School and Goshen Junior Football League players July 7-10 (4 to 5:30 p.m. daily for GMS at GMS; 6 to 7:30 p.m. daily for GJFL at Pringle Park). The GMS camp is $25. The GJFL camp is free. Equipment issue is 2:30 to 4 p,m. July 7 for GMS and 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 1 at Pringle Park. Early GJFL registration is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 31 at Goshen Little League.

Soccer

Central/Memorial camp: The free camp runs 6 to 8 p.m. June 23-25, with coaches Don Knowlton of Memorial and Chris Malott of Central directing. It is open to fifth- through eighth-graders.Registration forms are available in the Memorial athletic department or at emhschargers.org.

Nappanee Missionary camp: NMC is partnering with FC Indiana and the Haiti National Women's Team, coached by Shek Borkowski, to offer instruction July 18-20 on the church grounds at 70417 S.R. 19, Nappanee. Grades 1-2 will meet daily from 9 to 11 a.m. with grades 3-6 meeting daily from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $35 by May 11 or $45 by June 8. Coerver camps: Elkhart Sports Center will be the site of camps for ball mastery (ages 7-12) 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 23-27 (Camp 1) and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 14-18 (Camp 2), advanced (ages 10-14) 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 23-27 (Camp 1) and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 14-17 (Camp 2), advanced (ages 10-14) and elite (ages 12-17)  9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 27-23 (Camp 1 half day), 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 23-27 (Camp 1 full day), 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 14-18 (Camp 1 half day), 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 14-18 (Camp 1 full day); $179 for ball mastery, $189 for advanced, $199 for half day elite, $325 for full day elite. Volleyball

Elkhart Central summer camp: Elkhart Central High School has scheduled a camp June 9-12, for players entering grades 4-9 in 2014-15. Grades 4-6 will meet daily from 4 to 5 p.m. with grades 7-9 meeting daily from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $25. Elkhart Memorial summer camp: The camp, conducted by Memorial coach Jacquie Rost and staff, is slated for June 10-13. Cost is $25 for grades 1-3 (1 to 2 p.m.), $35 for grades 4-6 (2 to 3:30 p.m.) and $45 for grades 7-9 (2 to 4 p.m.). Registration forms are available in the Memorial athletic department or at emhschargers.org.

Diving

Elkhart Central camps: Elkhart Central High School diving coach Tom Adams will conduct camps June 23-27 at the ECHS pool. Students entering grades 5-8 in 2014-15 will meet daily from 3 to 4 p.m., with high school campers meeting daily from 4 to 6 p.m. Students should be able to swim at least one length of a 25-yard pool and be able to dive head-first off the board. Campers are asked to bring a swimsuit and arrive early enough to change by camp start time. High school campers will learn voluntary and optional dives. Difficulty will be based on individual skills. Cost is $35 for grades 5 to 8 or $64 for high school, each payable to ECHSAA Diving. To reserve a spot, contact Adams by June 20 at 574-875-6529.

Wrestling

Culver Academy camp: NCAA and high school champion Jason Tsirtsis, high school champion Alex Tsirtsis, Army head coach and NCAA champion Joe Heskett and Army assistant Paul Young will be among the clinicians at the Culver Academy National Champ Wrestling Camp. The camp is scheduled June 8-11. Camp directors are Culver Academy head coach and Jimtown High graduate Matt Behling along with J.T. Young. Cost for overnight campers is $325. NorthWood camps: Wa-Nee Schools have scheduled events and camps for May and June — Wa-Nee Youth Challenge (with cross country and track with coach Justin Bell at Andrews Field), 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17 (preschool to Grade 5); Boys basketball camp (with coach Aaron Wolfe at The Panther Pit), 9 to 11 a.m. for grades 4-6 and 1 to 5 p.m. for grades 6-9, June 9-13; Girls basketball camp (with coach Adam Yoder at NorthWood Middle School), 1 to 4:40 p.m. for grades 6-9 June 9-13 and 4:30 to 6 p.m. for grades 1-5 June 9-12; Volleyball camp (with coach Hilary Rebber at NorthWood Middle School), 1 to 4:40 p.m. for grades 6-9 June 9-13 and 4:30 to 6 p.m. for grades 1-5 June 9-12; Elementary and middle schools football camp (with coach Nate Andrews at NorthWood High practice fields), 9 to 10:15 a.m. for grades 1-6 and 10:30 a.m. to noon for grades 7-8 June 16-20; Boys and girls tennis camp (with coach Tif Schwartz at NorthWood High courts) June 17, 19, 20, 24, 26, 27 and July 8, 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18; Boys and girls soccer camp (with coach Brad Duerksen at Nappanee Elementary), 9:30 to 11 a.m. for grades K-8 Monday-Thursday, June 23-26. Cheerleading

Elkhart Central summer camp: The camp is open to students in Grades 1-8 and is scheduled for 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 16-20, at Elkhart Central High School. For more information, email Haley Warstler at hwarstler@elkhart.k12.in.us.

TOURNAMENTS & LEAGUES

Soccer

Concord Youth Soccer: Registration for the fall league, age 4 through grade 12, is planned for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the fields on C.R. 17. Online registration is available at concordyouthsoccer.com until May 31. Individuals from all area schools are welcome. The season begins July 29.

NorthWood Soccer Club: A recreational league for boys and girls ages 4-5 (U6), 6-7 (U8), 8-9 (U10) and 10-11 (U12) is scheduled for June 30 to Aug. 28 at Nappanee Soccer Complex at Wellfield Park, west of Northside Manor Apartments, 1200 N. Main St./S.R. 19. Cost is $30 per player (family discounts for multiple children are available). Registration deadline is May 10 with a $10 late fee after that date. TRAINING

Rieth 5K Training Runs: The runs are scheduled for Tuesdays June 10 to Aug. 26. Sign-in begins at 5:45 p.m. with the run beginning at 6:30. The runs will be on an all-terrain course used since 1997 in the Goshen Parks Department Classified Woods and canal bank northwest of Goshen College between the Elkhart River and Goshen canal. Access to the Rieth Interpretive Center is off of Plymouth Ave. south of Shanklin Park in Goshen. For more information, contact Doug Yoder at dougy@goshen.edu.
