KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Melissa Gillette of Goshen won the fourth annual Kalamazoo Marathon over the weekend and added a third award from Kalamazoo to the Gillette family.
Melissa Gillette was the first to reach to the finish line at the women's race Sunday, May 4, reports MLive.com.
Gillette crossed the line with a time of 3 hours, 6 minutes and 19 seconds.
She set a world record in 2012, when she won the Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon at Goshen College and established the indoor marathon record for women at 3 hours, 8 minutes, 53.8 seconds.
Gillette finished her Ph.D. in breast cancer development from Notre Dame at the end of March 2014, her husband Justin Gillette said in an email Monday, May 5. Her training had not been ideal because of her classes.
"Melissa was over 2 minutes behind the leader at mile 20 but kept pushing and eventually took the lead around mile 23," he said.
Justin Gillette said this is the 18th marathon Melissa has won since she started racing.
