Elkhart County area boys golf teams hope to build off recent success

Two letterwinners apiece return for 2013 sectional champions NorthWood and Penn. Northridge's Will Erekson was a state qualifier last spring.

As the 2014 high school boys golf season approaches, a few teams are looking to build off the successes of 2013.

NorthWood and Penn walked off with sectional hardware a year ago. The Brad Duerksen-coached Panthers reigned in the Fairfield Sectional at Black Squirrel. Penn, coached by Tony Polizzotto, won the South Bend Riley Sectional at Erskine Park.

For 2014, NorthWood (sectional Nos. 3 and 5 players Logan Kauffman and Brayden Glaser) and Penn (sectional Nos. 4 and 5 players Nick Thurin and Richard Jung) have two returning letterwinners apiece.

Penn went 17-3 overall and ran the table at 8-0 in the Northern Indiana Conference in 2013.

The 2013 Warsaw Regional at Stonehenge also featured South Bend qualifiers Marian (led by eventual IHSAA State Finals seventh-place finisher, sectional medalist and NIC MVP Michael Makris) and Elkhart Memorial and Fairfield advancers Northridge and Fairfield.

Returnees from coach Ryan Wixon's 2013 Memorial squad, which also went 19-4 in dual matches with all four losses coming by one stroke, are sectional Nos. 2 and 3 players Braden Sherwood and Mike Foy.

Northridge, coached by Dennis Sienicki, welcomes back four of five sectional players in No. 1 Will Erekson, No. 2 Tom Morrison, No. 3 Corbin Bullock and No. 5 Austen Schmidt. Erekson, the Northern Lakes Conference tournament medalist, went on to tie for 59th at the State Finals.

Sectional players Nos. 4 and 5 John Stack and Dustin Layne are back for Fairfield.

Another pair of regional players — Concord's A.J. Sandlin and Wawasee's Jeffrey Moore — are also back for 2014.

Fairfield and Riley are again sectional hosts in 2014 while area qualifiers will go to the Warsaw Regional.

Conference championships are slated May 24 for the NLC at Christiana Creek in Elkhart, Northern State at Mystic Hills in Culver and Northeast Corner at Noble Hawk in Kendallville. The NIC meet is scheduled for May 31 at Elbel Park in South Bend.
