Antron Brown tops NHRA U.S. Nationals qualifying in Indianapolis
CLERMONT — Defending series champion Antron Brown leads the field in Top Fuel for the Monday, Sept. 2, NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
Brown jumped from 14th to first in the final round of qualifying Sunday, Sept. 1, winning the pole with a 1,000-foot run of 3.811 seconds at 320.58 mph. He edged Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tony Schumacher, a nine-time Indy winner, by 0.003 second. Steve Torrence qualified third, another 0.001 back.
Matt Hagan’s 4.007 Saturday night held up for the pole in Funny Car. Hagan, driving a Dodge Charger for DSR, set track records for elapsed time and speed, running 319.22 mph.
Mike Edwards grabbed the No. 1 spot from Allen Johnson in Sunday’s first qualifying session. Edwards’ Chevrolet Camaro ran the quarter mile in 6.621 seconds at 208.2 mph, while Johnson’s Dodge Avenger, on the pole Friday, Aug. 31, and Saturday with a 6.646, slipped to seventh by the time qualifying ended Sunday.
Hector Arana remained on the pole in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.938 on his Buell.
Eliminations begin Monday at 11 a.m.
