ELKHART — Tom Thome, head golf professional at Elcona Country Club, has been named Golf Professional of the Year by the Indiana PGA.

Thome received the award in recognition of his performance as a golf professional, leadership ability and dedication to inspiring other professionals and players.

In his 20 years as the head golf professional at Elcona, Thome has guided nine assistant professionals into leading roles at golf clubs throughout the country. His accomplishments at Elcona helped earn him the 2012 Indiana Section PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award.

Thome also has encouraged aspiring golfers through a coordinated junior golf program at Elcona and instruction of professional and amateur golfers for tournament play.

“I’ve always followed a philosophy to lead by example as the best way to inspire other golfers,” Thome said.

Thome looks forward to hosting the Indiana State Amateur Championship at Elcona in 2016 when he expects several local golfers to compete. Elcona will become the eighth facility in Indiana to host the amateur tournament and the Indiana Open Championship (2011).

Prior to his tenure at Elcona, Thome served as an apprentice at Green Ridge Country Club in Grand Rapids, Mich.
