BUCHANAN, Mich. — Joe Thomas, in his 21st year as PGA professional/owner at Brookwood Golf Course, is helping out the child of a wounded soldier while also honoring his 87-year-old father, George Thomas, a World War II combat veteran.

As a part of Patriot Golf Day, an annual Labor Day Weekend event established in 2007, the Folds of Honor Foundation presented a $5,000 scholarship Monday to 2012 Farmington High School graduate Jacquelyn “Jacque” A. Pegg during a tournament at Brookwood.

She is the daughter of Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Dave Pegg, who was injured during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He served in Operation Desert Storm and later re-upped after the attack of Sept. 11, 2001.

Joe Thomas decided it was fitting that his father, who as a B-17 bombardier was with a crew that flew 19 bombing missions over Germany during World War II, be tied to the scholarship.

George, who went on to a long career at Elcona Country Club pro and Notre Dame golf coach, is a member of the Catepillar Club for successfully bailing out of a disabled aircraft.

The scholarship plaque says that George Thomas’ service during World War II “has been one of his greatest accomplishments and helped form his true patriotic spirit and love of country.”

Jacquelyn “Jacque” A. Pegg, a 2012 graduate of Farmington High School outside Detroit, will attend Oakland University on a $5,000 Folds of Honor scholarship.
