ELKHART — Melvin J. Wingard, 67, of Elkhart passed away at 4:25 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in his home.
He was born March 14, 1946, in Shipshewana to the late Perry and Wilma (Shrock) Wingard.
He married Brenda (Webre) Shrum on Nov. 23, 1984, in Elkhart. She survives at home.
Also surviving are his sons, Brian (Shannon) and Christopher Wingard of Elkhart and Randall (Catherine) Shrum of Marietta, Ga.; his daughter, Rhonda (Kevin) Mitschelen of South Bend; grandchildren Erik Wingard, Ellissa Doles, Kailah Wingard, Brendan and Brian Shrum, and Jacob and Jordan Mitschelen; sisters Esther (Earl) Miller of Middlebury, Mary Ellen (David) Yoder and Alice (Daniel) Bontrager, both of Goshen, and Linda (Freeman) Miller, Velda (Harry) Stutzman Jr. and Ruth Ann (Melvin) Miller, all of Shipshewana; brothers Elmer (Leanna) Wingard and Perry (Fannie) Wingard Jr., both of Goshen; brothers-in-law Robert (Sue) Kyle of Granger, P.D. (Kimberly) Kyle of Florida, and Toby (Jan) Webre and Chuck (Katrina) Webre, both of Louisiana, and sisters-in law Cindy (Louis) Luce, Chris (Carroll) Hogan, Mary Robert and Chole Webre, all of Louisiana.
Melvin was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Ralph “Bud” Kyle and Roy Robert.
A celebration of Melvin’s life will begin with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. Visitation will also be from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Adamsville Road Church of God, 51287 C.R. 7 N., Elkhart. Pastor Gary Ausbun will officiate, with burial following in Adamsville Cemetery in Edwardsburg, Mich.
Mel was a loving and devoted husband, father and brother who will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He was also adored by his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Papa Mel." He was an avid NASCAR, White Sox and I.U. basketball fan. He loved to spend time feeding and watching the multitude of birds who visited his back yard. He was an Elkhart General Hospital red coat volunteer. He was an active member, former Sunday school teacher and board member of Adamsville Road Church of God.
