Posted on Feb. 15, 2014 at 12:00 a.m.

ELKHART — Richard R. Dukeshier Jr., 63, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, due to complications from an accidental fall two years ago.

Richard was born Dec. 2, 1950, in South Bend to Richard Sr. and Dorothy (DeDario).

On April 18, 1970, he was married to his high school sweetheart, Patricia (Fackelman) in St. Thomas Church in Elkhart.

Surviving Richard are his wife, Patricia; daughter Mary (Kevin) Kreienbrink; son Rick (Amrita) Dukeshier III; grandchildren Blake, Danielle, Isabelle Kreienbrink, Romir and Mira Dukeshier; mother Dorothy; and two sisters, Karen (Ed) Recker and Cheryl Dukeshier.

Rick was a swimmer and that’s how he met Pat at the age of 15. Richard was awarded a swimming scholarship to Ball State and was hired by PHM schools after graduation as a math teacher and assistant swimming coach.

Several years later, at the height of the tennis frenzy, Rick taught himself how to play and subsequently resigned from assistant swim coach to be assistant tennis coach. He later became the head coach.

He was a member of USTA and played tennis competitively for many years. Above all, he loved his family and was proud of his son and daughter. His grandchildren were the sparkle in his eyes. Every summer you would find him on the river, in the pool,or on the island with his “babies.”

Unable to sit still, you would find him teaching, playing tennis or working on one of his homes, which is where the accident occurred. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Visitation for Rick will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at the funeral home with visitation for one hour prior. Cremation will follow.

Special thanks to his sister in-law, Debby Doktor, for being such a rock and to his brother in-law, Bob Fackelman, for all of his support. Thanks to good friends Nancy Smith, John and Karen Bodey and cousins Peggy and Dan Lafree.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 4626 S. Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614.
