Bernard R. Jurus

YUMA, Ariz. — Bernard R. "Bernie" Jurus, 76, of Goshen, Ind., passed away Jan. 13 at his winter home in Yuma, holding hands with his wife, Linda Rothrock Jurus.
He was born June 25, 1937, in Chicago to Lucille (Sherin) and Stephen Jurus.
He married Linda Rothrock, in Yuma, Dec. 31, 2010; 34 years from their first New Year’s Eve together.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, an infant sister and son Vincent.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Bonnie Leighton of Englewood, Colo;, two sons, David Jurus of Santa Monica, Calif., Eric Jurus of Granada Hills, Calif.; two grandsons in Colorado; one great-grandson; brothers Donald Jurus, John Jurus and William Jurus all of Oak Forest, Ill.; a sister, Bernice Benson of Lyle, Ill.; and special caregiver Becky Cutter.
Mr. Jurus lettered in gymnastics at Lindblum High School in Chicago. He graduated from DePauw University in Chicago with a B.S. in philosophy. He taught elementary school in Chicago.
He retired in 1995, from Cook County Environmental Protection Agency as a Federal EPA inspector.
He spent more than 40 winters walking the sugar sands at Fort Myers Beach, Fla. He loved his labradors, Archie, Duffy and Bowser. He enjoyed gardening, laughing, telling endless jokes and swimming.
He volunteered at Harvest Basket food program and bingo before the United Labor Agency for Community Services closed in June 2010.
Cremation has taken place at Yuma Mortuary. An Irish wake for Bernard will be Saturday, April 26, at their farm in Goshen.
