MILFORD — Harriett (Hershberger) Jay, 93, formerly of Elkhart and Goshen, passed away at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Milford.
She was born July 24, 1920, in Topeka to Noah and Alta (Cripe) Bontrager.
She was a devoted wife to Eli Hershberger for 42 years and to Veto Jay for 13 years.
Surviving are three children, Douglas (Cindy) Hershberger of Marianna, Fla., Pamela (Jim) Housman of Milford and Jeffrey (Dawn) Hershberger of Elkhart; one stepson, Neil (Patsy) Jay of Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Gena Cummings, Shelly (Mike) Lyne, Kimberly (Walter) Reams, Amy Sue (Rolf) Smith, Matthew (Becky) Tice, Stephanis Fardulis, Jeffrey Eli Hershberger and Chelsea Spillman; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; a special sister-in-law and friend, Martha Winslow of Union, Mich.; and three brothers-in-law, Roman (Florence) Hershberger and Roy Hershberger, both of Goshen, and Floyd Hershberger of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ralph Bontrager, Edwin Bontrager and Meryl Bontrager; and a sister, Bernice Bontrager. She also was preceded in death by her husbands, Eli Hershberger and Veto Jay; two stepsons, Dennis Jay and David Jay; a grandson, Ryan Hershberger; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Hershberger; and a great-grandson, Raymond Lavign.
Harriett’s acts of kindness were reflected in her active membership at Elkhart Brethren Church, the Four Seasons Homemaker’s Club and Oaklawn Auxiliary. She donated more than seven gallons of blood to Elkhart General Hospital. She will also be remembered for her grateful heart, beautiful smile and joyful spirit. She loved birds, nature, gardening and entertaining.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, funeral service at Grace Lutheran Church, 203 E. Main St., Syracuse. Pastor Wendy Piano will preside, and cremation will follow. Entombment will be at a later date in Rice Cemetery in Elkhart.
